tillandsia butzii

Spotted Squid

$9.95

Tillandsia butzii requires frequent watering and ample air flow. Water by misting 3-5 times per week. It is strongly suggested that you avoid soaking this air plant as water can collect unseen inside its bulbous base and cause it to rot. Take extra care to avoid rot by allowing it to dry upside down or on its side after each watering. This will allow any unseen water to flow out of its base. The butzii is one of the few air plant species that is ageotropic. This means it can grow upside down without any adverse affects on it’s growth. Most air plants will curve upwards or die if grown upside down, but the butzii defies gravity and will grow perfectly fine without curving upwards or dying. In fact it’s best to grow this air plant upside down. The butzii enjoys indirect light from a bright room or shade under a tree. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight.

Each Tillandsia is hand picked and cared for with love while waiting to meet it’s new owner. Please Note that each Tillandsia will vary slightly in shape, size and color and can have small blemishes as they are real, living plants. We always inspect each one thoroughly to ensure that the plants are 100% healthy before sending.

Description

The Spotted Squid Air Plant (Tillandsia butzii) is a thin, smooth leafed, dark green air plant with spots. It is uncommon to see a spotted tillandsia species. Its leaves are thin and hollow & grow quite long. Its bulbous base is also hollow. The butzii produces beautiful purple tube flowers and eventually little baby air plants (pups) will grow at its base. Display this air plant by hanging it in sea shells or mounting it to driftwood.

New To Air Plants? Learn More!

What are air plants? Their technical name is Tillandsia and they are one of the few plants out there that don’t require dirt to thrive. They are epiphytes which means they use their roots as grabbers to attach to trees and rocks instead of using them in the dirt. Some air plant species actually do use their roots in dirt but there aren’t too many like that. Air plants receive nutrients through their leaves by way of tiny little trichomes. Water and air both can have the nutrients they need to thrive and grow bigger. Air plants are very slow growing compared to most other plants and you might not see any noticeable growth for a year or two! Air plants are also related to the more commonly known bromeliad which you will see quite often at nurseries or grocery stores.
